HELP PROTECT OUR SCHOOLS THIS SUMMER
Dear Coordinator,
WITH HUNDREDS of schools breaking up this week for the summer holidays, Hertfordshire Constabulary is asking residents to help keep a watchful eye over them during the break to help prevent crime.
Break-ins at schools can occur over the summer holidays as thieves try to take advantage of empty classrooms and quiet playgrounds.
However, officers will be carrying out extra patrols around schools over the period and residents can also play their part at keeping criminals at bay by reporting any suspicious behaviour around schools to police immediately.
Dave Mance, County Crime Reduction Officer, said: "If you live near a school or pass by them regularly, you could make a really big difference in keeping them secure over the summer break. Burglaries can be a huge cost to schools, not only in terms of the amount of money it takes to replace stolen equipment, but the inconvenience of repairing broken windows and doors and the irreplaceable damage to cherished items."
Dave continued: "If you see anyone acting suspiciously near a school then please report it as soon as you can. Your call and information could really help us in preventing a school break-in or catching the person responsible. Call 999 in an emergency, or 0845 33 00 222. Alternatively, call Crimestoppers, an independent charity, anonymously on 0800 555 111."
Hertfordshire Constabulary works in close co-operation with Hertfordshire County Council to help protect schools across the county.
Richard Thake, Hertfordshire County Council's Executive Member for Education and Skills, added: "We are grateful that the police have drawn attention to this issue. We do give advice to schools about security on their premises but additional help from the public is always welcome."
